                          Hackett / Ó hAicéad

The Hacketts (of Norman origin) settled in Leinster in the 12th Century in Kildare, Kilkenny, Dublin, Wicklow and Carlow.

This small clan is quite different to the Hacketts of Ulster. Our own recent pedigree relates to Ulster, but the Irish Hacketts are not an Ulster family .

A branch did migrate later on into Connacht where they were known as MacHackett with a seat at Castle Hackett near Tuam.

So while a distinct branch of Hacketts did settle and become historically important outside of Leinster, the Hacketts of Castle Hackett are no longer extant.

Another origin of the surname Hackett in Ireland pertains to CountiesTyrone and Antrim where the name "Hackett" was an anglisized form of Mac Eachaidh (Mc Cahey or McGahey).

A third and smaller origin of the surname in Ireland pertains to planters who came from Scotland into Ulster bearing the surname Hackett having originated in a place called "Hawkwood" near Strathaven, Lanarkshire in Scotland. They took their surname from the place they came from i.e.Hawlwood which became "Hackett" long before they settled in Ireland.

Clan Ó hAicéad is registered with Finte na  hÉireann
